So if you have to have a cavity filled or already did you may have started to wonder how long it will take for the numbing to go away. Drooling and sagging mouths are typical symptoms of having a cavity filled so you can imaging why people would want this to go away as quickly as possible. Well the answer is not as simple as it may sound. Numbing goes away based on a few different things. I would consult with a dentist if you would like to get a more detailed analysis of what to expect but this article should give you a generally good idea of what to expect.
When you are getting your mouth numbed before having a cavity filled what actually happens is a doctor will inject a needle in the gums around where the tooth is going to be drilled and filled. The doctor may inject numbing fluid four or five times around your tooth just to make sure you won’t feel anything. To be honest this is probably the most painful part of having a tooth filled nowadays.
After you are numb the doctor will drill through your tooth where the cavity is and then fill it with a cement that will harden and become a part of your tooth. So you may be wondering what in the world this has to do with the numbing period and how long it will take. Well I guess I could tell you if you are nice.
The time it takes for you to regain the feeling in your mouth depends greatly on the amount of numbing fluid used in your mouth. The more fluid used the more time it will take for you to regain feeling in your mouth. The bigger the cavity the longer the process will take and the longer you will need your mouth to be numb. A good time table for a small cavity is two or three hours. If you have a large cavity it could be anywhere from 3 to 5 hours of numbness.
As always I want to make sure you know that if you want more or better advice I would consult with an actual dentist not a DDS consultant online. I can tell you that if you have a date at night and your appointment is in the morning you should be OK to go without drooling or other mouth problems.
