Causes of Bad Breath

What causes bad breath ?

Most of us tend to think that only bad brushing can result in bad breath. But this is not true, there are many reasons why bad breath is such a common problem. Unfortunately none of us realise that we are suffering from bad breath, until some well-meaning person points it out to us!

Good dental Hygiene
In order to avoid bad breath, we should brush at least for two minutes and after all our main meals. Just brushing for 30 seconds is not sufficient to remove all the stray particles from our mouth, and these particles convert into bacteria and leave an unpleasant smell in our breath.

Smoking causes bad breath
Smoking is one of the biggest causes behind bad breath since it causes respiratory tract infections, dental problems and gum diseases, all of which are forerunners to bad breath.

Diet and bad breath
Some food items such as garlic and onions are responsible for leaving a bad smell in our mouths which makes the mouth and breath smell foul. When proteins such as fish and meat get left in the mouth and they decompose, they can also be responsible for unpleasant odours.

Illnesses and medicines can cause bad breath
Among the biggest causes of Halitosis or bad breath are illnesses. Diseases such as Tonsillitis, Diabetes, Acid Reflux, and Kidney problems can cause a major case of unpleasant breath. Medicines such as antihistamines can also leave an unpleasant smell.
