6 Unconventional Remedies to Ease Toothache

Pain in the tooth occurs when the innermost layer of the tooth also known as dental pulp becomes inflamed. The pulp comprises of sensitive nerves and blood vessels. There are many causes of toothache such as cavities, cracked tooth, receding gums, ulcers in gums, sinusitis and many more. Warm Salt Water

But only few know that it has medicinal properties like reducing pain and staving off bacterial infection. Put a peppermint tea bag in 1 cup boiling water and steep for 20 minutes. After the tea cools, swish it around in your mouth, and then spit it out or swallow. The astringent tannins in the tea may help suppress pain. This toothache remedy will definitely benefit in your dental woes.

Rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can be an effective anti-microbial tooth wash. Mix equal parts 3% hydrogen peroxide and water, and swish the mixture in your mouth for 30 seconds. You can repeat once or twice. This may provide a few minutes of temporary toothache relief, and it can help ward off gingivitis, which is a possible cause of tooth pain. A word of caution here is to not to ingest the solution as it can cause stomach or intestinal problems. Also, if you mix too much hydrogen peroxide it may burn your mouth.

Ice It Away

Put an ice cube in a plastic bag, wrap a thin cloth around the bag, and apply it to the aching tooth for about 15 minutes. This will numb the nerves. You can also put an icepack on your cheek, over the painful tooth. Some people also believe that if you massage your hand with ice, you can relieve tooth pain. It is speculated that the hands will send a cold signal to your brain that may outweigh the pain felt in the tooth. Try this unorthodox remedy for toothache and see if you can feel relief from the pain.

Apply Garlic

Just like peppermint, garlic is not only used for culinary preparations, it too has medicinal properties. Garlic is an antibiotic and can inhibit the growth of bacteria which is attacking the tooth. There are two ways to use garlic. You can both mash a garlic clove, a little salt and apply the paste to the aching part. You can also chew a clove. This can be done 2-3 times a day.
